2017 – 2018 FAFSA opened October 1, 2016
Typically, the FAFSA filing season begins in January, but beginning this year the FAFSA filing season launched October 1, 2016. The priority deadline for filing the FAFSA will still be March 1, 2017.
The timeframe isn’t all that is changing. Beginning with the 2017-18 FAFSA, students and parents will report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017-18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) will report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information.
These changes will be a great benefit to students as they will no longer have to estimate tax information and will be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import tax information into the FAFSA.
Although students must report the information the FAFSA requests, if a family’s income situation has changed substantially since the 2015 tax year, please contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at (919) 515-2421 or by email at financialaid@ncsu.edu.
