The American Justice Corps is looking for mentors in the Fall 2019 Semester who are looking to make a unique positive impact in their community. Our mentoring program has been developed for the purpose of minimizing the recidivism rate, or the rate of re-suspension, within Wake County Public School System (WCPSS). Additionally, we are working to help high school students break from the cycle of suspension to reduce the likelihood that they will become part of the School-To-Prison Pipeline.
While the AJC is a nonprofit (501(c)(3)), we are not a charity, and we do not simply provide community service. Our mentors and our leaders firmly believe that the students with whom we work are deserving of the opportunities that other students receive to achieve their goals. In recognizing the needs of these students, we work to protect the equal rights and opportunities of all individuals within the community.
Applicants to the mentoring program will have the chance to work with students throughout the course of the semester and to eventually develop a one-on-one mentor-mentee relationship. This will occur through various educational segments and activities based within our semester-long curriculum. Mentors are expected to attend every subsequent Friday mentoring session after their initial orientation, from 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM (2 Absences are permitted for the semester, as missing mentoring sessions can be damaging to mentor-mentee relationships). Transportation is provided via carpooling, and mentors typically return to the school by 4:30 PM.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please fill out the link below. Once applications have been filled out, dates for interviews will be sent out to applicants, and details for orientation will be released shortly thereafter.
Students that are looking for more information about the program should review the program description on the application link. Any questions about the program or application can be directed to americanjusticecorps@ncsu.edu, and will be responded to promptly.
