San Francisco State is recruiting for the Fall 2018 cohort of MA students in Sexuality Studies.
Drawing on disciplines and fields including communication studies, ethnic studies, gender and women’s studies, gerontology, history, queer studies, psychology, public health, and sociology, the SF State Sexuality Studies Department emphasizes theoretical and methodological sophistication and a commitment to addressing social inequality and advancing social justice.
We seek applicants with some familiarity with sexuality studies as an academic field of study; an interest in sexuality as it intersects with race, gender, class, and other social differences and identities; and a commitment to sexualitystudies as a means of understanding and challenging social inequalities and promoting social justice. Once at SF State, students have the opportunity to work with scholars who publish with top journals and university presses, conduct research with federal and foundation funding, pursue careers as public intellectuals, and exemplify committed and inspiring teaching.
An MA in Sexuality Studies can lead to a number of next steps. Many graduates of our MA program seek further training as a sexual health professional (therapist, educator, or other practitioner) or work in and lead community-basedorganizations committed to sexual health and justice. Some develop and teach sexuality education for high schools, colleges/universities, and medical schools; pursue careers in the arts; or become leaders in movements for, forexample, sex workers rights, comprehensive sexuality education, the sexual rights of people with disabilities, HIV prevention, and sexual health across the life course. Still others go on to further study of sexuality in top humanities or social science PhD programs.
