Community Conversation, “What are the racial implications of singing the word ‘Dixie’ in the NCSU Alma Mater?”

On Tuesday, November 14 at 7p in Daniels 434, the Impact Leadership Village will be hosting the first in a new dialogue series called “Village Perspectives.”  Village Perspectives are interdisciplinary dialogues centered on one common, guiding question moderated by a faculty member whose scholarship aligns with the selected focal question.
Building on the Living and Learning Villages’ Common Reading Mini-Grant trip to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, the guiding question for our November Village Perspectives is “what are the racial implications of singing the word ‘Dixie’ in the NCSU Alma Mater?”
The question is particularly timely as Jackie Gonzalez, Student Body President, just wrote an opinion piece for the Technician about his very topic within the context of Red and White Week. Given the charged nature of this discussion, we have connected with Dr. Blair Kelley from the History department to serve as dialogue moderator and speaker. She will begin the session with some historical context of the word ‘dixie’. Dr. Kelley is also working to cultivate some pre-activity resources that all participants will ideally complete in order to begin the evening with a shared starting point of conversation.
We encourage students to complete the following RSVP Form, so we can gauge attendance as we approach the day-of.
