Nonprofit Leadership and Development, Summer 1

NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP and DEVELOPMENT (COM 466) is a 3 credit service-learning class which teaches critical thinking and writing skills, as students of all ages volunteer with local and campus nonprofit agencies to help build capacity to better serve our community!
The class:
– enrolls freshmen through graduate students
– enrolls students from all 10 colleges in a wide variety of majors
– engages up to 20 diverse area nonprofit agencies/semester
– makes a local Community Impact of $28,000 – $67,000 and 1,200 – 6,700 hours of service per semester
– counts as Concentration elective credit for Poole’s Business Management – Human Resources major, Political Science – Public Policy major, Communication – PR & IOR majors, Natural Resources – PRT major, as well as for the Minors in Nonprofit Studies and Leadership Studies
– requires no tests, only papers, journals & a presentation
– prepares students for internships, co-ops and jobs
– expects 15 (Summer) – 30 hours of service to agencies, as arranged between agencies & their student volunteers
– includes a few short assignments due before the 1st day of class, as needed by the community partners
– enjoys the honor of helping to grow young social entrepreneurs like Leigh-Kathryn Bonner (of Bee Downtown), recently featured on the NC State homepage.
